I’m Maria, a German citizen who has spent the past ten years living abroad – calling Amman, Casablanca, Dakar, Nairobi, London, Singapore, and Tokyo home along the way. I currently live in New York City.
I’m an energy and climate expert transitioning into journalism, currently completing an M.S. in Journalism at Columbia University. Before making this shift, I spent more than eight years working on energy access, renewable energy, and climate issues across Africa, the Levant, and beyond, including with UNDP, NGOs, and international consulting organizations. As a journalist, I’m drawn to international affairs, human rights, conflict, climate and energy, social issues, and investigative business reporting – particularly stories that cross borders and combine on-the-ground reporting with OSINT, data, and in-depth investigation.
When I’m not reading or writing, I’m working my way through the restaurants and delicacies of wherever I live, traveling to immerse myself in new cultures, meeting people, learning languages, and capturing moments through photography. I stay active with yoga, dancing, surfing, kitesurfing, skiing, hiking, and climbing. I speak fluent English, German, and French, and basic Japanese and Arabic.
